What does lim⁡x→af(x)=L\lim_{x\to a} f(x) = L mean?
As xx gets close to aa (from both sides, x≠ax \ne a), f(x)f(x) gets as close to LL as we like.
When does a two-sided limit exist?
When the left-hand and right-hand limits both exist and are equal.
lim⁡x→0sin⁡xx\lim_{x\to 0} \frac{\sin x}{x}
11 (with xx in radians).
lim⁡x→01−cos⁡xx\lim_{x\to 0} \frac{1 - \cos x}{x}
00
Three conditions for continuity at x=ax = a
f(a)f(a) is defined, lim⁡x→af(x)\lim_{x\to a} f(x) exists, and the two are equal.
Removable discontinuity
A hole: the limit exists but f(a)f(a) is undefined or different from it.
Intermediate Value Theorem
If ff is continuous on [a,b][a,b] and NN is between f(a)f(a) and f(b)f(b), some cc in [a,b][a,b] has f(c)=Nf(c) = N.
Horizontal asymptote of a rational function with equal degrees
y=y = ratio of the leading coefficients.
