Solve a problem

Step-by-Step Math Solver

Type a problem and choose how much help you want: the full worked solution, one hint at a time, or a check of the answer you already have. Every result says whether it came from the exact engine or from the AI service.

Full worked solution with the engine's checks.

JPG, PNG, WEBP or PDF up to 10 MB. You can also drag and drop a file or paste a screenshot.

Three ways to use the solver

Solve shows the complete method: how the problem was read, each transformation, the formulas used and the final answer, followed by the checks the engine ran. Use it when you are stuck and want to see a clean model solution.

Hints reveal the same method one step at a time. The final answer stays hidden until every step has been shown, so you can stop as soon as you see the idea you were missing and finish the problem yourself. That is usually the fastest way to make the method stick.

Check answer compares what you wrote with the engine's result. It does not match strings: equation solutions are compared as sets of numbers, so 3, 2 and x = 2 or x = 3 both count; derivatives are compared at several test points; antiderivatives are accepted when they differ from the engine's by a constant; and decimals rounded to the places you typed are accepted with a note showing the exact value.

Where the answer comes from

Most inputs are handled by the exact math engine that powers the calculators on this site. It works with exact fractions and symbolic algebra, substitutes its answers back into the original problem, and labels the result Verified by the exact math engine.

When a problem is written in words, the AI service may rewrite it as an equation for the engine. The engine still does the arithmetic, and the label tells you that only the reading of the wording came from the AI. If the engine cannot handle the problem at all, an AI-written solution is labelled AI explanation, not engine-verified, and the answer checker refuses to grade against it.

If a word problem still cannot be read, it is reported as unsupported instead of guessed. Everything typed as math always works.

What you can type

Linear and quadratic equations such as 2x + 5 = 17 or x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0, including complex roots; arithmetic with fractions, powers and roots; derivatives written as d/dx followed by an expression; indefinite and definite integrals written as integrate x^2 or integrate x^2 from 0 to 3; percentages such as 15% of 80; and summary statistics such as mean of 4, 8, 15. Use ^ for powers, * for multiplication when it helps readability, and sqrt() for square roots.

For geometry, physics, chemistry, statistics and matrices, the dedicated calculators accept labelled fields and give the same kind of worked steps. The calculators hub lists all of them.

Asking about the Riemann hypothesis, P vs NP or Navier–Stokes? These are unsolved, so the solver shows their exact statements and established facts, never a made-up proof. See famous math problems.

Frequently asked questions

Is the solver free?

Yes. Solving, hints and answer checks are free and need no account. Requests are rate-limited per visitor to keep the service fast for everyone.

Why does the hint mode hide the final answer?

Seeing the answer first makes it tempting to stop thinking. Each hint shows one more step of the method, and the answer appears only after the last step, so you can finish on your own whenever the next move becomes clear.

How does Check answer decide that my answer is correct?

It compares values, not text. Solutions to an equation must match as a set, derivatives must agree at several test points, antiderivatives may differ by a constant, and a decimal rounded to the number of places you typed is accepted with the exact value shown.

Why can some answers not be checked?

If your answer cannot be read as math, or the result is a summary such as mean, median and mode together, the checker says so rather than guessing. Compare with the worked solution instead.

Does the AI ever override the engine?

No. When the engine can solve a problem, its result is what you see. The AI only helps read word problems, and anything it writes on its own is labelled as not engine-verified.

Is my problem stored?

Problems are processed to produce the answer and are not attached to a profile. If the site operator has enabled usage metering, only a count and a salted hash of your connection are kept, never the raw address.
