The problem. Here is the problem: 4(2x minus 3) minus 3(x minus 5). Simplify the polynomial expression in x.
Steps, part 1. Read the expression. Distribute (multiply out every product). Each term in one factor multiplies each term in the other: a(b plus c) equals ab plus ac. Result after multiplying out. Combine like terms. x: 8 minus 3 equals 5; constants: negative 12 plus 15 equals 3. Like terms have identical variables and exponents, so only their coefficients are added.
Steps, part 2. Write the result in standard form. Terms are ordered by descending total degree.
The answer. So the answer is 5x plus 3. After expanding and combining like terms the expression is 5x plus 3, a polynomial of degree 1 with 2 terms.
Check. Spot check at x equals 0.73: original 6.65, simplified 6.65, which checks out.
