How to type a problem
The solver reads ordinary keyboard math, so you do not need special symbols. A few simple conventions cover almost everything, and every solution starts by restating the problem as it was read, so you can confirm it matches what you meant.
- Equations
- Use one equals sign and a single-letter variable. Write a number times a variable as 2x and use ^ for powers. Linear, quadratic and higher-degree polynomial equations are solved exactly.
x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0- Fractions
- Type fractions with a slash. The result stays exact and is reduced to lowest terms. Put a numerator or denominator in brackets when it has more than one term.
3/4 + 5/6- Roots and functions
- Write square roots as sqrt( ) and use the usual names sin, cos, tan, ln and exp, always with the argument in brackets. Note that log( ) means the natural logarithm, the same as ln( ).
sqrt(50)- Derivatives
- Start with d/dx followed by the function. The steps name each rule as it is applied, such as the product rule or the chain rule.
d/dx x^2 sin(x)- Greatest common factor and least common multiple
- Use gcd( ) or lcm( ) with whole numbers separated by commas. The steps show the prime factorization of each number.
gcd(84, 120)
When a dedicated calculator is better
Some problems need more than one line of input. Systems of equations, inequalities, integrals with limits, factoring, simplifying rational expressions and matrix problems each have their own calculator, with a separate field for every part, worked examples and an explanation of the method.
Learn the method, not just the answer
Short guides that explain each technique with worked examples you can check in the solver.
How to Solve Quadratic Equations: Factoring, Completing the Square and the Formula
Factoring is fastest when it works, completing the square explains where the formula comes from, and the quadratic formula always works. Here is how to choose, with every example checked.
Read guideWhat Is a Derivative? A Clear Introduction
The derivative of a function measures how fast its output changes as its input changes, at a single instant. Graphically it is the slope of the tangent line; algebraically it is the limit of average rates of change over smaller and smaller intervals.
Read guideHow to Calculate Standard Deviation (Sample and Population)
Standard deviation measures how far data values typically lie from their mean. This guide walks through the calculation step by step, explains when to divide by n and when by n minus 1, and shows how to read the answer once you have it.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI math solver?
It is a tool that reads a math problem, typed or photographed, works out the solution and explains each step. Here, exact math engines do the calculation, and AI helps read images and word problems.
Is the math solver free?
Yes. The solver and all published calculators are free to use without an account.
Can it solve math from a photo?
Yes. Upload a JPG, PNG, WEBP or PDF, paste a screenshot or use your phone camera. The text is read in your browser; you review and correct it before it is solved. It works best with printed or typed problems.
Can it solve algebra problems?
Yes. It solves linear, quadratic and higher-degree polynomial equations, simplifies expressions and works with fractions, GCF and LCM.
Can it solve calculus problems?
Yes. It finds derivatives with the rules shown, and integrals of common functions including integration by parts for typical cases, with definite integrals evaluated.
Can it solve word problems?
Word problems are interpreted by the AI layer when it is enabled; the resulting calculations are then done by the exact engine.
Does it show the steps?
Yes. Every solution lists the steps in order, the formulas used and a check of the final answer.
How accurate is the math solver?
Typed problems are computed by deterministic algorithms, not guessed, and answers are verified where possible. Any AI-interpreted result is labeled so you can review it.
Can I use it for homework?
Use it to check your work and understand methods. Try the problem yourself first, then compare your steps with the solution.
Does it support multiple languages?
Yes. The site is available in 16 languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese and Indonesian.
