  1. 1. The problem
    Worked example
    A right triangle has legs 1 and 1. Find the hypotenuse.
  2. 2. Steps, part 1
    1. c2=a2+b2c^2 = a^2 + b^2
      Write the Pythagorean theorem
    2. c2=12+12=1+1=2c^2 = 1^2 + 1^2 = 1 + 1 = 2
      Substitute the legs and square them
    3. c=2=2≈1.414213562c = \sqrt{2} = \sqrt{2} \approx 1.414213562
      Take the positive square root
    4. Area=12ab≈0.5,P=a+b+c≈3.414213562\text{Area} = \tfrac12ab \approx 0.5,\qquad P = a + b + c \approx 3.414213562
      Area and perimeter
  3. 3. Steps, part 2
    1. ∠A=arctan⁡ab≈45∘,∠B=90∘−∠A≈45∘\angle A = \arctan\frac{a}{b} \approx 45^\circ,\qquad \angle B = 90^\circ - \angle A \approx 45^\circ
      Acute angles
  4. 4. The answer
    c=2≈1.414213562c = \sqrt{2} \approx 1.414213562

    c = √2 ≈ 1.414213562

  5. 5. Check
    • Check: a² + b² = 2 and c² = 2, which agree.
    • Angle sum: 90° + 45° + 45° = 180°.

Transcript

The problem. Here is the problem: A right triangle has legs 1 and 1. Find the hypotenuse. Find the hypotenuse of a right triangle from its two legs.

Steps, part 1. Write the Pythagorean theorem. The hypotenuse c is the side opposite the right angle and is always the longest side. Substitute the legs and square them. Take the positive square root. Lengths are positive, so only the positive root is used. Area and perimeter.

Steps, part 2. Acute angles. Angle A is opposite leg a and angle B is opposite leg b; the right angle C is 90°.

The answer. So the answer is c equals the square root of 2 approximately 1.414213562; area equals 1 over 2 approximately 0.5; perimeter approximately 3.414213562; angles approximately 45°, 45°, 90°. In every right triangle the square on the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares on the two legs. Knowing any two sides fixes the third, and the angles follow from the tangent ratio.

Check. Check: a squared plus b squared equals 2 and c squared equals 2, which agree. Angle sum: 90° plus 45° plus 45° equals 180°.
