  1. 1. The problem
    Mean, median and mode
    Data: 11, 10, 14, 26, 13, 26, 2, 26
  2. 2. Steps, part 1
    1. 2,10,11,13,14,26,26,26(n=8)2, 10, 11, 13, 14, 26, 26, 26\quad (n = 8)
Sort the data from smallest to largest
    2. xˉ=1288=16\bar{x} = \frac{128}{8} = 16
Mean: add the values and divide by how many there are
    3. median=13+142=13.5\text{median} = \frac{13 + 14}{2} = 13.5
Median: the middle value of the sorted list
    4. Mode: the value(s) that appear most often
  3. 3. Steps, part 2
    1. 26−2=2426 - 2 = 24
      Range: largest minus smallest
  4. 4. The answer
    Mean = 16; Median = 13.5; Mode = 26; Range = 24\text{Mean = 16; Median = 13.5; Mode = 26; Range = 24}

    mean 16, median 13.5, mode 26, range 24

  5. 5. Check
    • Sum 128 = mean × n = 16 × 8 = 128

Transcript

The problem. Here is the problem: Data: 11, 10, 14, 26, 13, 26, 2, 26. Measures of central tendency for a list of numbers.

Steps, part 1. Sort the data from smallest to largest. Mean: add the values and divide by how many there are. Median: the middle value of the sorted list. With 8 values (even), the median is the average of values 4 and 5. Mode: the value(s) that appear most often. Most frequent: 26.

Steps, part 2. Range: largest minus smallest.

The answer. So the answer is Mean equals 16; Median equals 13.5; Mode equals 26; Range equals 24. The mean balances all values, the median splits the sorted data in half and is less affected by outliers, and the mode is the most common value.

Check. Sum 128 equals mean times n equals 16 times 8 equals 128.
