  1. 1. The problem
    Mean, median and mode
    Data: 7, 3, 16, 25, 12, 17
  2. 2. Steps, part 1
    1. 3,7,12,16,17,25(n=6)3, 7, 12, 16, 17, 25\quad (n = 6)
Sort the data from smallest to largest
    2. xˉ=806=13.33333333\bar{x} = \frac{80}{6} = 13.33333333
Mean: add the values and divide by how many there are
    3. median=12+162=14\text{median} = \frac{12 + 16}{2} = 14
Median: the middle value of the sorted list
    4. Mode: the value(s) that appear most often
  3. 3. Steps, part 2
    1. 25−3=2225 - 3 = 22
      Range: largest minus smallest
  4. 4. The answer
    Mean = 13.33333333; Median = 14; Mode = no mode; Range = 22\text{Mean = 13.33333333; Median = 14; Mode = no mode; Range = 22}

mean 13.33333333, median 14, mode no mode, range 22

  5. 5. Check
    • Sum 80 = mean × n = 13.33333333 × 6 = 80

Transcript

The problem. Here is the problem: Data: 7, 3, 16, 25, 12, 17. Measures of central tendency for a list of numbers.

Steps, part 1. Sort the data from smallest to largest. Mean: add the values and divide by how many there are. Median: the middle value of the sorted list. With 6 values (even), the median is the average of values 3 and 4. Mode: the value(s) that appear most often. Every value appears exactly once, so there is no mode.

Steps, part 2. Range: largest minus smallest.

The answer. So the answer is Mean equals 13.33333333; Median equals 14; Mode equals no mode; Range equals 22. The mean balances all values, the median splits the sorted data in half and is less affected by outliers, and the mode is the most common value.

Check. Sum 80 equals mean times n equals 13.33333333 times 6 equals 80.
