Descriptive Statistics
Mean, median, mode, variance and standard deviation.
Descriptive statistics summarise a data set with a few numbers. Measures of centre say where the data cluster: the mean (the balance point) and the median (the middle value). Measures of spread say how far values typically sit from the centre: range, interquartile range and standard deviation.
The right summary depends on the shape. For roughly symmetric data the mean and standard deviation work well; for skewed data or data with outliers the median and interquartile range are more resistant. Always look at a graph, such as a histogram or box plot, before choosing.
Key terms
- Sample variance
- Average squared deviation using n - 1 in the denominator.
Key ideas
- Mean .
- Sample standard deviation: .
- IQR ; outliers fall more than IQR beyond the quartiles.
- A long right tail pulls the mean above the median.
Worked example
Find the mean and median of .
- Sum: .
- Mean: .
- Ordered middle value: .
- The outlier 24 pulls the mean above the median.
Answer: Mean , median
Common mistakes
- Finding the median without sorting the data first.
- Using instead of for a sample standard deviation.
- Reporting the mean for strongly skewed data without comment.
